Aging Baby Boomers Spark New Trends in Cosmetics Industry |
Palm Springs, CA - May, 2004 Every day more than 10,000 Americans turn 50. Having come of age in the liberal Sixties and hit by the realities of a world with too many choices and too little time to evaluate them, Baby Boomers are actively looking for new ways to simplify their lives. Now 78 million strong, Boomers not only want to escape the complexities, they want to act and look the part. In fact, those of us born between 1946 and 1964 have become the most health and beauty conscious demographic in history.
This behavioral trend also coincides with one of the most insidious health problems facing aging Americans today. Melanoma, more than any other form of skin cancer, is on the rise. Why? Like other organs, our skin is less able to protect itself as we age. Its ability to release melanin (part of the skin's self protective mechanism) diminshes by the time we reach 30 at a rate of ten to 20 percent each decade.
